Indications of Flagyl 400
The following illnesses are appropriate for treatment with Flagyl 400:
Pharmacology
The antibacterial drug Flagyl 400, which is a member of the imidazole class, is employed as an antiprotozoal agent. Metronidazole's 5-nitro group is metabolized less by anaerobes. Studies have shown that the reduced form of this medication interacts with DNA and has a bactericidal effect.
Dosage & Administration of Flagyl 400
Suspension and Tablet:
Trichomoniasis (Adults and Children Over the Age of 10)-
For 7 days, take 200 mg tid or 400 mg bid.
For two days, take 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night.
2 gm in one dose for one day
Children's Trichomoniasis-
Children aged 7 to 10 years: 100 mg bid
Children aged 3 to 7 years: 100 mg bid
Children aged 1-3 years: 50 mg bid
Intestinal amoebiasis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
For 5 days, take 800 mg bid.
Amoebiasis of the intestine (Children)-
400 mg bid for children aged 7 to 10 years.
Children aged 3 to 7 years: 200 mg bid
Children aged 1-3 years: 200 mg twice daily
Extra-intestinal & Asymptomatic amoebiasis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
400-800 mg tid for 5-10 days
Extra-intestinal & Asymptomatic amoebiasis (Children)-
Children 7-10 yrs: 200-400 mg tid
Children 3-7 yrs: 100-200 mg qid
Children 1-3 yrs: 100-200 mg tid
Giardiasis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
2 gm once daily for 3 days
Giardiasis (Children)-
Children 7-10 yrs: 1 gm once daily
Children 3-7 yrs: 600-800 mg once daily
Children 1-3 yrs: 500 mg once daily
Acute ulcerative gingivitis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
200 mg tid for 3 days
Acute ulcerative gingivitis (Children)-
Children 7-10 yrs: 100 mg tid
Children 3-7 yrs: 100 mg bid
Children 1-3 yrs: 50 mg tid
Acute dental infections (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
200 mg tid for 3-7 days
Bacterial Vaginosis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
400 mg bid for 7 days
2 gm as a single dose for 1 day
Leg ulcers and pressure sores (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
400 mg tid for 7 days
Anaerobic infections (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
800 mg initially and then 400 mg tid for 7 days
Anaerobic infections (Children)-
Children 1-10 yrs: 7.5 mg/kg tid
Surgical prophylaxis (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)-
400 mg tid started 24 hours before surgery for 1 day
Surgical prophylaxis (Children)-
Children 1-10 yrs: 7.5 mg/kg tid
Vaginal Gel:
As an antiprotozoal agent, the antibacterial medication Flagyl 400, which belongs to the imidazole class, is used. Anaerobes metabolize the 5-nitro group of metronidazole less efficiently. According to studies, this medication's reduced version interacts with DNA and kills bacteria.
Suppository:
Anaerobic Infections-
Adults: 1 g every 8 hours for three days, followed by 1 g every 12 hours.
Children aged 5 to 10 years: 500 mg every 8 hours for three days, then every 12 hours; adults aged 10 and up: 500 mg every 12 hours.
Surgical Precautions-
Adults: 1 g 2 hours before surgery; up to 3 additional 1 g doses every 8 hours for high-risk procedures.
Children 5-10 years old: 500 mg 2 hours before surgery; up to 3 additional 500 mg doses every 8 hours for high-risk procedures.
IV Infusion:
Metronidazole intravenous infusion requires no dilution and should not be mixed with any other drugs prior to administration.
Adults and children over the age of 12 should infuse 500 mg 8 hourly at a rate of 5 ml/minute, with a 24-hour maximum of 4 g. Most patients require only 7 days of treatment, but this can be extended in cases where reinfection is likely. Administration shortly before surgery should be followed by 8-hourly doses for the next 24 hours for surgical prophylaxis.
Children under the age of 12: 7.5 mg/kg body weight/day, administered every 8 hours at a rate of 5 ml/minute.
Interaction of Flagyl 400
Concurrent use of disulfiram may result in psychotic symptoms. Oral anticoagulants' effect may be enhanced. Lithium toxicity may be increased. 5-fluorouracil toxicity may be increased if renal clearance is reduced. Cyclosporin serum levels may rise. Busulfan plasma levels may rise, resulting in severe busulfan toxicity. Increased metabolism with phenobarbital and phenytoin results in lower serum concentrations.
Contraindications
Patients having a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives should avoid taking it.
